I am Minter Dial, a storyteller, filmmaker, three-time author and an international professional speaker. After a 16-year international career at L’Oreal, I founded The Myndset Co. and then of the DigitalProof Consultancy, where I speak and consult on Branding, New Tech and Digital Transformation, working with major global brands such as L’Occitane, Societe Generale, Google, Samsung, Remy Cointreau, Kering and Tencent.
In 2018, my book, Futureproof, co-authored with Caleb Storkey, was not only shortlisted, but won the Embracing Change award at last year’s Business Book Awards. We can say winning the award really gave a huge boost to the promotion and sales of Futureproof. As a result, I was only too keen to submit my latest book, Heartificial Empathy, Putting Heart into Business and Artificial Intelligence. And I’m delighted it has been shortlisted (for the same award!) in 2019.
This last book initially came out of a personal journey (involving an empathic bot), but also from observing how businesses are struggling to manage the eternal tension between profit and purpose, between doing well and being good, or more prosaically, between cutting corners costs versus growing value. I believe that empathy will be the sine qua non-superpower of the successful businesses of the future.
The key concept in the book is that business leaders need to learn to flex their empathic muscles, take responsibility to establish their ethical line, and consider carefully how they approach using artificial intelligence to drive their strategy.
Heartificial Empathy lays out the business case (i.e. the why) for bringing empathy into your organisation and AI initiatives, looking at concrete examples as to how to do so and the pitfalls to avoid. As a bonus, there is a highly curated list of useful resources for the eager reader.
