The Silenced Voice: There is Purpose in Pain

Dr Marcia Morgan is an author, of two books: Black Women Prison Employees: The Intersectionality of Gender and Race, and The Silenced Voice: There is Purpose in. She is a member of the Prison Service Journal Editorial Board and has published several journal articles in the field of intersectionality and organisational psychodynamics. She is known for her cross-cultural coaching and mentoring programmes, where she applies her specialism in autoethnography, intersectionality, and organisational psychodynamic theory to her practice. She works for Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, UK and was a senior lecturer at the University of East London.

Marcia wrote The Silenced Voice: There is Purpose in Pain, for two reasons. First, to inspire others, to remain focused and fulfil their purpose. And second to support businesses to create inclusive working environments. The aim was to develop leaders’ understanding of the psychosocial consequence to their staff, when their intersectional identities are overlooked and ignored within the workplace. The book captures the readers’ imagination, by igniting an emotional connection as well as a logical interpretation of the experience shared through the poems, interview extracts and interpretative narrative.

This is a valuable book for businesses interested in creating a diverse and inclusive work environment that encourages individuals to be their authentic self at work. While providing advice and encouragement to the individual to feel empowered to reclaim their voice in the workplace.

The author’s personal experience of feeling excluded, invisible and othered because of her intersectional identities – gender, race, and employment status, was the catalyst for her completing a PhD. Feeling silenced in the workplace because of gender and racial oppression, created a desire for her to develop her credibility as an expert in the field of intersectionality, autoethnography, and organisational psychodynamics, while contributing to knowledge production and prison occupational literature. It was important for Marcia’s research to be accessible beyond academia, because there is lack of black British women academic authors in the field of prison occupational literature and her specialist field. But most importantly, in writing her second book, through poetry the complexity of the theories applied in her research can be understood by all readers.
