Why did you write the book?

My aim for writing this book was to share with professional women globally what’s really going on when it comes to career progression so that they feel empowered to embrace their careers and unlock their full potential.

I recognise that individual empowerment is only one part of the multifaceted approach necessary to increase gender diversity in the workplace. Empowerment of the individual is not meant as a panacea, nor a substitute for the focus and effort of organisations to foster a culture where female talent is recognised, embraced and leveraged for tangible result. It has however a key pillar upon which change is built.

What value does the book offer?

In the book I unveil the “unwritten rules” to career progression (career enhancing behaviours and mindset) and then demonstrate through personal stories (my own as well as those of the many women I have had the privilege of coaching) how to navigate those rules in a practical and authentic way.

Here’s the thing…. the same rules apply to men and women, but when women use the same approach to navigating those rules, they suffer backlash. Have you ever heard a woman described as ‘too aggressive’ or ‘acting like a b**ch’? My years of experience as a coach and mentor reveal that once women understand the unwritten rules and strategies to master them, they perform magnificently.

What did you gain from writing the book?

When I officially launched the book in March 2020 we were just beginning to realise the severity of COVID-19, with the majority of my target audience suddenly working from home. There was a silver lining that I hadn’t expected: my book quickly reached Amazon #1 Best Seller in Business & Finance as career women were on their laptops and could easily pick up my messages about the launch of the book.

On a personal note, my two sons (19 & 31) had availability (due to the virus!) to provide expert support for my online marketing campaign, taking me way out of my comfort zone. Working with them gave me a sense of ‘success’ regardless of how many books in the end were purchased. (See my first book, Step Aside Super Woman for further musings on the topic of work/life ‘success!’). It was nerve wracking but great fun! The book has also been an invaluable tool for clients, enabling them to continue their learning and take a deeper dive into some of the ‘unwritten rules’ we cover during our coaching or workshop sessions.
