I am a former CEO and Chairman of both public and private companies with 40 years experience in the Corporate World, more latterly as an international Consultant and Executive Coach. I’ve always been an avid consumer of leadership wisdom and a serial journalist of my own experiences as a leader, but over the last 5 years I’ve been increasingly interested in the more neurological, psychological and psychotherapeutic dynamics of Corporatism, and my scribblings and my research started to come together into a more coherent thesis. I was overtaken by a profound desire to synthesise everything that I’d learned and experienced into a single text book that would firstly explain the Corporate World and just why it is that thoroughly decent people behave in unnatural and frequently abusive ways, and secondly give hard pressed Corporate Citizens a routemap to recovery.
In introducing the characters of the Corporapath and the Corporate Hostage (and I have been both), the book helps leaders, managers and employees working in corporate environments to understand what is happening to them emotionally and psychologically, facilitating a deeper self awareness and thus allowing a more confident response to stressful situations. The book’s central mission is to galvanise others to talk openly about CTSD – Corporate Traumatic Stress Disorder. The book finally differentiates between Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Corporate Emotional Intelligence (CEQ), helping the reader to a deeper self awareness and the potential for a more ethical, more sustainable and more productive self mastery.
Since the book has been published, apart from the obvious massive sense of relief of having completed such an intensive work, I have been bowled over by the reaction, firstly from within my own network, and then increasingly from outside. It seems to have struck nerves and chords alike.
Corporate Emotional Intelligence: Being Human in a Corporate World has been shortlisted for the Embracing Change category of the Business Book Awards sponsored by the Change Management Institute. The book’s available as a Kindle and paperback, with an audible version upcoming Click Here to find out more.
